There was palpable tension yesterday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, as news of alleged impeachment process of Governor Abiola Ajimobi filtered in.
Many people said they got the news via the social media and breaking news aired on a private television station based in Lagos.
It was alleged that 24 State House of Assembly members had signed the impeachment notice to be served on the governor and that the symbol of the House, the Mace, had been taken into their custody.
Speaking, the chairman, Parliamentary Caucus, Hon. Fatai Salam told journalists at the conference hall of the Assembly, that the report was false.
Salam, who was at the briefing alongside 10 members of the 7th Assembly, said there had not been any allegation of misconduct against the Governor that could warrant notice of impeachment.
“The 7th Assembly since inception has been enjoying good relationship with each other and there is no plan to disrupt the existing peace in the state,” he said.
“The minority leader has just left the Assembly complex few minutes ago, it is because the House has gone on recess, that is why the conference was not attended by every member of the House,” he said.
He therefore appealed with the people of the state to remain calm and go about with their normal lawful businesses, stressing that there was no impeachment threat against the governor in whatever capacity.
The House is currently on recess and will resume by August 28.
