Mrs.-Laurentia-Laraba-Mallam-Minister-for-Environment- 1The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that the challenge of erosion especially in the southeast will be put to an end in a few years.
Minister of Environment, Mrs Laurentia Mallam, who described the challenges posed by erosion in the region as pathetic, warned Nigerians not to play politics with the situation.
She said the federal government have spent N19 billion to implement the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEW MAP) beginning with seven southern states in the country.
According to the report, the economic cost of gully erosion and watershed which has become the usual site in many communities in the southeastern part of Nigeria was devastating.
Thousands of people become stranded and stripped of their livelihoods and lands owing to persistent erosion that has intensified in recent years.
An intervention plan spearheaded by the concerned states few years ago, gradually gave birth to the Nigeria erosion and watershed management project (NEW MAP).
The root causes of gully erosion appears complex and the soils in southern Nigeria are highly susceptible to water erosion, once a gully starts, it expands rapidly and becomes difficult to tame.
The NEW MAP  is a strategic investment loan of over 500million dollars for an 8 year period to help reduce the nation’s vulnerability to erosion.
The major programmes includes World Environment Day, National Council on Environment, National Renewable Energy Day, National Environmental Sanitation Day, National Desertification Day.
