PDP-vs-APCAbout six persons have been shot and injured after supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) clashed in Rumueprikom community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, in Nigeria’s south-south region.
Gunshots fired by the warring groups resulted in an immediate closure of businesses in the area, which incidentally is the hometown of the Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike.
Eyewitness accounts said the bedlam held sway after the deposed paramount ruler of Oboi/Akpor Urebisi, Chief Anthony Uwabie, shot at a group of men at Wimpey Junction.
The bullet, said to have hit his son, Mr Clement Uwabie, a strong member of the PDP.
According to Uwabie’s son , his father shot him because he refused to join the APC.
Attempts by the youths to attack Chief Uwabie’s residence, is said to have been repelled by the police.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Tunde Ogunsakin, who confirmed the incident, said that Chief Uwabie had been arrested by the police while the gun used in shooting his victims had been recovered.
According to Mr Ogunsakin, the chief has volunteered useful information to the police and a single-barreled gun with expended cartridges, pellets and live ammunition has been recovered from the chief while the matter had been transferred to the State Anti-Robbery Squad for further investigation.
