imageAhead of the August 9 governorship election in Osun State, the Department of State Security, DSS, has calmed anxiety about its heavy presence in some parts of the State.
“Our presence in Osun is not political; the agency is not even known for such”, said an operative who spoke to NewsGenesis on Monday.
According to him, the two major contenders – the All Progressives Congress’ candidate and incumbent governor Rauf Aregbesola and Peoples Democratic Party’s Senator Iyiola Omisore – are grassroot politicians who have all kinds of followers.
Taking this into consideration, the source said, the federal government would not leave anything to chance, especially at a time the security situation of the country was of grave concerns to all peace loving Nigerians.
Both the PDP and the APC have been accusing each other of plotting to unleash violence before and during the polls.
Last week, vehicles conveying dozens of DSS officers were sighted in parts of Oshogbo, the state capital.
The development heightened fears that the election day could mean ‘war’.
But our source dismissed such speculation saying, “these are just unfounded claims. Some people alleged that security agencies were drafted to Ekiti to scare voters, but nothing of such happened”.
“How many cases of harassment were reported? How many people came out to say we arrested them? How many people have come out to say we blocked them from voting?
“I insist that the DSS isn’t an organisation pushed around by any body. Our presence in Osun is to maintain law and order”, the source added.
