Cleverley has revealed his pride at being named captain of Manchester
United, when they played Roma on Saturday in a pre-season game. The 24-year-old England international, who came through the United academy, wore the armband for the first time as the Red Devils defeated Roma 3-2.
“It was fantastic, a really proud moment,” he told MUTV. “I’ve been here since I was 11. Now, whatever I go on to do, I can say i captained Manchester United. At 24 years old, it’s not bad.”
Louis van Gaal has not named his new permanent skipper at Old Trafford, after Nemanja Vidic and vice-captains Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra departed this summer. Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Michael Carrick are believed to be favourites for the role.
Rooney scored two goals against Roma and put in a fine all-round performance. Cleverley showered praise on the striker and Juan Mata.
“He and Juan were fantastic,” Cleverley added. “We are lucky to have players of that quality. It was their brilliant magic that put us in control.”
